At times, you might feel a need to access your phone’s content on your PC. But you don’t always carry a USB cable with you or either it’s damaged. In that case, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) does come handy in helping you transfer files wirelessly via FTP connection between your phone & PC.

Since there are apps like ShareIt & SuperBeam to help you in transferring files wirelessly. While using all these apps you can transfer files between your phone & PC, but these aren’t reliable options. Many times you might fail to transfer via these apps due to the loss of connection. Also, they’ll not allow the user to access phone files on their PC, just like a normal USB MTP connection. FTP connection solves all these problems, with a much stable wireless connection between the phone & PC and it works just like a regular USB MTP connection, in which user can access whole storage of phone on their PC. However, the speed of transfer is slower than the regular USB transfer. You need not install a 3rd party software on PC to access files on your phone.

Let’s see how to transfer files wirelessly via FTP:

  1. Download the Mi File Manager from Playstore. If you own a Xiaomi device running MIUI than you do get this file manager as a default file manager. Open the file manager app & look for the slide-out menu button on top to access the slide-out menu.   2. Inside FTP menu, tap on ‘Start‘ button to start an FTP server from your phone over your current WiFi network. Once you have created an FTP server, you’ll get a unique address of this connection, for example., ftp://192.168.1.100:2121(Here, ftp:192.168.1.100 is the address of the host & 2121 is the port, which you are going to use on your PC)

  3. Now head over to your PC & make sure it’s connected to the same WiFi network as your phone.   4. You will now be able to access all your files/folder from your phone. You can copy, move or even transfer files between both devices like a normal connection. And once you are done, you can simply close the window. And that’s how you’ll be able to transfer files wirelessly via FTP between your phone & PC. Since this is just like a regular wired connection, you can simply drag & drop files from FTP software to the desktop & vice-versa.
